Batik, Woodcarving and Silk factory

Originating in Indonesia and brought to Sri Lanka by the Dutch at the turn of the nineteenth century, the batik industry has developed into a distinctive textile art form that is exclusive to the nation. In its most basic form, batik is the art of decorating a piece of fabric by using wax to draw a design on it and then coloring the remaining fabric to create a vibrant mosaic with both colored and uncolored areas. In Kandy, woodcarving has a long history. In Kandy’s Temple of the Tooth, numerous witnesses attest to this. Take advantage of the chance to watch a traditional artisan demonstrate their methods for carving wood. Silk is one naturally occurring protein fabric that can be weaved into clothing. Silk is ideal for wearing in warm weather and while exercising due to its absorbency. Its low conductivity maintains warm air near the skin during chilly conditions.
